John Cage One for solo piano, 1987 |
|||||||||||||||
|
With this piece entitled, One, Cage creates an experience of music that is created by the listener. How is this possible? How can the listener create the music if it is already created? What Cage succeeds in doing is writing a specific set of sounds that have no perceptions or aesthetics (or prejudices) from the composer. To put it simply, the "beauty and purpose" of the muisc is created by the listener's perceptions. Furthermore, this allows for each individual listener to create his/her own musical experience because there is no pre-determined musical intent and thus, no right or wrong. Have a listen for yourself and discover your own creative genius! |
